Owls have always been fascinating birds to me from the time I was a young boy walking through the woods in North Vancouver and discovered a nest of baby screech owls to more recent encounters with various owls found around my studio in North Saanich.
It seems to be a rare and special moment when one has the opportunity to observe an owl at close range. Often it seems that a fleeting glimpse or a haunting call in the distance is a more typical owl encounter.
The three owls I have chosen to sculpt include the Great Horned Owl, the Barn Owl and the little Screech Owl. All are mounted standing on a wooden stump or branch suitable for display on a mantle or shelf preferably at, or slightly above, eye level. The sculptures each exhibit a sense of watchfulness on the verge of movement.
My owl sculptures are deeply etched to provide a richly textured surface which lends itself to subtle variations in the finishing patina.
